A research group including Researcher Kohei Yamamoto and Senior Principal Researcher Jun Miyawaki of the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (QST), and Assistant Professor Hiroto Suzuki of the Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Tohoku University, has successfully developed a microscope capable of visualizing the behavior of electrons in materials with a spatial resolution of one micrometer or less.

This achievement was realized using QST’s resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) instrument “2D-RIXS”, which has ultra-high energy resolution capable of distinguishing extremely small differences in electronic energy states. The instrument is installed at NanoTerasu.

This is the first time in the world that electron behavior inside materials has been visualized with micrometer-scale spatial resolution using a RIXS instrument. The new technique is expected to accelerate research on quantum materials and the development of next-generation information processing devices.

On March 10, Ms. Kazuko Ikuta, Director of the Policy Division, Minister’s Secretariat of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and her delegation visited NanoTerasu. They were guided by Dr. Takahashi, Director General of the QST NanoTerasu Center, Mr. Kawakami, Director of the NanoTerasu Secretariat, and Dr. Takata, President of the Photon Science Innovation Center (PhoSIC).

Following an overview presentation on NanoTerasu and an introduction to the coalition framework, the delegation toured the experimental hall. During the tour, they observed NanoTerasu’s advanced beamlines and prototype electromagnets.

A new model of a traveling-wave linear accelerator has been installed in the NanoTerasu booth on the 3rd floor of the HOKUSHU Sendai City Science Museum, located in the “Life and Science – Wonder Science Room” exhibition area.

This model was created to visually demonstrate the principle of a linear accelerator using a traveling-wave radio-frequency electric field. In the model, the traveling RF electric field is represented by a mechanical traveling wave, allowing visitors to observe and experience how electrons are accelerated.

By turning a handle, visitors generate the mechanical traveling wave that represents the electric field. This wave pushes and accelerates yellow balls that represent electrons, enabling visitors to intuitively understand how particles gain speed in a linear accelerator.

On February 19, a delegation from the Science and Technology Office of the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan visited NanoTerasu.
The group was guided by Masataka Kado, Leader of the Promotion and Public Relation Group of the NanoTerasu Secretariat. During the visit, the delegation received an overview of NanoTerasu and toured the experimental hall to learn more about the facility’s advanced research environment.

　

On February 18, a delegation from the Federation of Science and Technology Organizations visited NanoTerasu.

The visit included an overview presentation on NanoTerasu, followed by a tour of the experimental hall, where the delegation observed the facility’s advanced synchrotron radiation infrastructure and research environment.

From January 20 (Tue) to February 8 (Sun), 2026, we held the “NanoTerasu: Mechanism and Features” Poster Exhibition at Tohoku Electric Power Green Plaza in Sendai.

Hands-on workshops for elementary and junior high school students were also conducted on Sundays during the exhibition period.
